Navi Mumbai: A team of the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch unit- 2 have arrested three fraudsters, hailing from Assam, who posed as prospective buyers on Olx and after meeting the owners of sports bikes, decamped with the vehicles after taking a trial ride.
A total of five bikes were recovered from the accused, including two from theft cases registered last month at Khandeshwar and Nerul police stations. Owners of three other recovered bikes are being traced, informed DCP (crime) Suresh Mengade.
Mengade further said that accused, Abdul Mujumdar, 28, Abdul Lashkar, 26, and Hujjarhul Choudhary, 26, confessed to having cheated two persons in Khandeshwar and Nerul and decamping with their KTM sport bikes.
“Their modus operandi was to contact the bike owners on Olx and after meeting them, they used to ask for a trial ride and decamp with the bike. It was difficult to trace their location because, in order to target a bike owner, they would buy a cheap mobile and a SIM card and dispose them after accomplishing their motive, ”he added.
“From the CCTV camera surveillance on the streets, we zeroed-in on the three suspects who were the same persons who had cheated the bike owners in Nerul and Khandeshwar. After apprehending them in police custody, they revealed that they had used their bike registration number plate on the five stolen bikes and sent them as goods parcels by train from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) to Kamakhya junction in Assam.Son crime branch unit-2 senior inspector Giridhar Gore and his team communicated with the officials at the goods parcel department at LTT and also at Kamakhya junction in Assam, and recovered the five KTM sports bikes collectively worth Rs 5.50 lakh, ”Mengade further informed.
