BMC denies nod to both Shiv Sena camps for rally at Shivaji Park

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, citing a police report, has denied permission to both factions of the Shiv Sena to hold the party’s traditional Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park in Mumbai’s Dadar.

In its letters to the Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde groups of the Shiv Sena, the civic body said the Mumbai Police in their report had raised concerns about possible law and order problems if one side was allowed to hold the event and the other was denied permission. .

The BMC has attached the police report in its reply to the two groups.

Both Thackeray and Shinde groups have already approached the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the municipal corporation to allow their side to hold the rally at Shivaji Park. The pleas are scheduled to be heard on Friday.

“There is still time for the Dussehra rally; come what may the rally will be held at Shivaji Park itself. We are not going to hold it anywhere else,” said Ajay Choudhari from the Thackeray camp.

This is not the only ground which the two groups are fighting for. At Kalyan in the neighboring Thane district, they are at loggerheads over holding the Navratri festival at the Durgadi Fort. The Shinde camp has already applied for and got permission to hold the festivities this year.

The tussle for the grounds in Kalyan and Mumbai is part of the larger fight to prove which is the real Shiv Sena. The group holding the party’s annual programs would likely be seen as having more legitimacy.
