The Broncos have shaken up their coaching staff with Kevin Walters’ assistant Terry Matterson and his brother Steve Walters departing the club.
Walters departed the club of his own choosing, but the axing of Matterson comes after the Broncos lost six of their last seven games to go from fourth on the ladder to missing the finals series in a dismal end to their 2022 campaign.
“The Brisbane Broncos can announce some changes to its Football Department,” the Broncos said in a statement.

NRL Assistant Coach Terry Matterson and Football Administration Manager Steve Walters are departing after playing major roles in the club’s revival over the past two seasons.
“Both Terry and Steve have worked tirelessly in their roles over recent years and everyone at the club is extremely thankful for their significant contribution to the Broncos,” Broncos coach Kevin Walters said.
“Terry has played and coached at the highest level. He won two premierships with the Broncos as a player. He has worked as a coach for the best part of 20 years and bought a wealth of experience and knowledge to his role as a senior assistant coach.

“The process was a normal review that we do every year and we will take those leanings and ensure that we keep improving.
“We were disappointed with the last month of the season but the team and club have taken great strides and our goal is to continue on that path in 2023.”
The Courier Mail reported Walters was devastated with the brutal call on Matterson, but understood tough decisions needed to be made after Brisbane’s horror end to the season.
Walters is gutted by the decision to sever ties with Matterson, which came after an internal review that included consultations with most of the Broncos’ playing group.
Walters’ other assistant former Titans head coach John Cartwright is expected to be retained for 2023.
Walters has yet to lock in a replacement for Matterson, with Broncos assistant Steve Kearney identified as one option.
But it remains to be seen if Storm coach Craig Bellamy would let go of one of his most valued assistants.
