In the first semifinal of the women’s cricket competition in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Indian women’s cricket team, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, will take on England on Saturday (August 6). The semifinal matches will be played at Edgbaston and if India manages to get the better of the hosts, then it will be a historic achievement for the Women in Blue.

The women’s cricket competition has been introduced in the multi-sporting event for the first time in history this year, and the Indian team has done exceedingly well up until now.

The 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup losing finalists won two out of three group stage matches to qualify for the last four, and a win on Saturday will guarantee them a podium finish.

In the three matches played so far, the Indian team has impressed with its all-round performance. In the tournament’s opener, they made life difficult for the Australians but failed to win the game. Then, in the second and third games, they defeated Pakistan and Barbados by 9 wickets and 100 runs, respectively, to secure a place in the semi-finals.

For India, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, opening batters Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, and Jemimah Rodrigues have performed well with the bat so far, but the star of the campaign is undoubtedly Renuka Singh Thakur. The 26-year-old right-arm pacer has two four-fors to her name so far and is also the leading wicket-taker in the tournament.

In the all-important semifinal against nemesis England, who are without the services of regular skipper Heather Knight, India will need all the big players to step up to confirm India’s place in the historic gold medal match.
