After a three-month hiatus, the English Premier League football will return on Friday (August 5) evening as Crystal Palace host Arsenal at Selhurst Park in the opening match of the season. This is the second successive season that the English top flight’s season is starting with Arsenal playing a London derby away from home.
Last season Mikel Arteta’s side suffered a shock defeat to newly promoted Brentford on the opening night of the season. However, the Gunners are a much changed side since starting last season with three defeats in a row. With the arrival of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from defending champions Manchester City, the three-time champions have secured a significant boost.

Arteta will be looking to make amends for the last time Arsenal played at Selhurst Park. The two teams’ previous encounter at the end of last season saw Palace thrash the London giants 3-0. The defeat proved to be the start of a shocking run of form that saw them suffer a spectacular collapse and miss out on a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League despite being in a comfortable position on the table.

Talking about Palace, they suffered a big blow this season when Conor Gallagher returned to parent club Chelsea. The team, who are managed by Arsenal legend Patrick Viera, finished 12th in the table. Viera will be looking to build on the success and secure a top-10 finish this time around.
