SEARCY – After a summer of waiting, Harding’s fall sports athletes return to campus this weekend.
Friday was reporting day for Harding football, the reigning Great American Conference football champions and NCAA playoff qualifiers five times running.
Harding, the GAC preseason favorite according to the conference’s coaches, had 118 players report, 57 of whom were on the active roster last year, 18 returning redshirt players and 43 newcomers. Of the newcomers, 36 are incoming high school players, five from junior colleges and two Division 1 transfers.
After check-in and physicals Friday and meetings Saturday and Sunday, Harding will begin preseason practice Monday morning.
Harding football’s first game is Sept. 1 against East Central in Ada, Oklahoma.
Harding’s soccer and volleyball teams report over the weekend and begin their seasons earlier than normal due to the NCAA hosting this year’s national championships earlier than normal.
Men’s soccer opens its season at home against Union (TN) on Aug. 25. Volleyball, picked second in the GAC preseason coaches hole, opens Aug. 26-27 at the St. Edward’s Tournament in Austin, Texas, and women’s soccer opens at home on Aug. 26 against Southwest Baptist.
Harding cross-country opens Sept. 3 at the University of Memphis Twilight Classic.
