Jonathan Law Milford vs. East Lyme CIAC Connecticut football

MILFORD – Law football coach Chris Haley was a little disappointed his team allowed its first points of the season against East Lyme on Friday. He was, however, quite happy with the final result.

Quarterback John Neider threw for three touchdowns and ran for three more, and Matt Hagerty added two touchdown receptions and a touchdown run to lead Law to a 49-7 win over East Lyme at Lawmen Field.

The Lawmen are now 3-0, their first 3-0 start in over 20 years. So far this season Law has outscored opponents 143-7.

Hagerty finished with six receptions for 194 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown pass from Neider. Neider ended the night completing 18 of 21 passes for 431 yards.

“Everything clicked tonight,” Haley said. “Our offense played well, but our defense played well too with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. They have a very strong offensive line and our focus was on that line to make them throw more.

“John and Matt clicked tonight, but we have six experienced and talented players on offense and any one of those six can win a game for you. Overall, we had nine returning starters on offense and six on defense, so we figured we would have a strong start to the season. Now we go into the heart of our schedule starting with Branford in our next game.”

Hagerty got the offense started for the Lawmen on an 8-yard touchdown run with 6:08 to go in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

On the Vikings next possession, they went eight plays, capped by quarterback Ronin McNamara’s 1-yard keeper up the middle to tie the game at 7.

Law responded by scoring the game’s final 42 points.

Law retook the lead when John Neider scored on a 2-yard run with 46 seconds left in the first quarter for 14-7. Neider made it 21-7 following a 7-yard sweep to the left with 9:45 to go in the second.

Hagerty hauled in a 45-yard touchdown pass from Neider to make it 28-7 with 3:19 to go in the first half. Charlie Becker completed the first half scoring with a 7-yard pass from Neider with 1:41 left.

On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Hagerty bolted down the left sideline for his 75-yard touchdown pass from Neider for a 42-7 lead.

“This was definitely my best game,” Hagerty said. “I love lining up in the slot and going for deep passes, but I get as big a thrill scoring on a run too. Tonight, it was a total team effort on both sides of the ball. “

Neider scored the final touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run with 2:01 to go in the fourth quarter.

McNamara led East Lyme (0-3), completing 15 of 21 passes for 165 yards.
