Ohio State football and the recruiting battle for 4-star DB Joenel Aguero

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Breaking down the top 35 Ohio State football targets in the 2023 recruiting class.

Joenel Aguero

WHO: 5-star safety who plays for Mill Creek High School in Lynn, Massachusetts.

SIZE: 6-foot, 195 pounds.

RANKING: The No. 3 safety in the class of 2023, no. 49 player.

THE BATTLE: Aguero narrowed down his options to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State and Texas A&M.

THE HOMESTATE FACTOR: As with offensive lineman Samson Okunlola, there isn’t a Power Five school in Massachusetts that’s at a level capable of keeping players like Aguero home. Boston College is the closest, but the Eagles’ only top-100 recruits were in 2000 and 2004.

THE GEOGRAPHY: Lynn is 814 miles from Ohio State’s campus, a two-hour flight.

THE OTHER CONTENDERS: Georgia picked up early momentum for Aguero last fall after he earned an offer, but that seems to have cooled off some. Unlike other top targets, he didn’t spend his spring taking unofficial visits around the country.

It’ll be interesting to see who on his top seven ends up with an official visit as we head into June.

THE OSU NEED: The Buckeyes are taking three safeties minimum in this cycle with Malik Hartford and Cedrick Hawkins already committed. It could be four, if it’s the right combination. If both Aguero and Caleb Downs choose OSU, both will have a spot as top-100 recruits.

WHAT THIS GUY DOES: After spending the past two years at IMG Academy in Florida, Aguero is returning home for his senior year of high school. His size suggests he fits into OSU’s scheme at the nickel safety spot.

WILL THE BUCKEYES GET HIM?

I said secondary Perry Eliano ends up landing Downs as his first big get as an OSU assistant. I’ll go the other way with Aguero, who will end up somewhere in the SEC.
