Daithi O’Se says the pandemic has made him re-evaluate his life and that he finds it easier to turn jobs down now.
The RTE presenter is best known for hosting The Today Show and Rose of Tralee on the national broadcaster, but as he is not a member of staff he often takes on other jobs throughout the year.
But after spending lockdown at home with wife Rita Talty and their son Micheal Og, Daithi says he is now more picky about what he says yes to because his family is his main priority.

“I was off the weekends during the pandemic and there was a real solace in not having to be anywhere, not having to get off the ouch on a Saturday afternoon and drive Dublin to put on a tux,” he said.
“So I won’t lie to you, I’m now very selective about what I do at the weekends. I’ve a relationship with certain companies that I work with and I’ve kept them on, but I don’t really take on any new stuff.
“I’m happy to relax and take it easy with the family. Ogie has his football training and matches now at the weekend so it’s important for me to be around for those.”
Working as a freelancer means Daithi has found it hard to say no to work in the past but now finds it easier to turn opportunities down because money isn’t everything.
“I suppose it was work and when you work for yourself you feel you have to take it all on,” he continued to the RTE Guide.
“I work for myself so as a freelancer and contact worker, you take the contracts that come in.
“If I don’t go to work, I don’t get paid, it’s as simple as that. But it does come to a point where you have to say, that’s enough.”
He went on: “You have these landmark, watershed moments in your life, where things happen to you and you decide to change course.
“And it can be hard to change your mindset, so you do need something big to happen to say, ‘Okay, I need to reel this in a bit’. But you know what, once you start saying no, it gets very easy . “
The Today Show will take its usual summer break at the end of this month and Daithi is enjoying having some downtime and traveling to New Jersey with Rita and Ogie.
Before Today returns in September, Daithi will host the Rose of Tralee in August for the first time since 2019 – something the family of three are very much looking forward to.
“After missing it for two years, we’re all looking forward to that now. It will be brilliant,” he said.
“[Rita and Ogie] will join me on the Sunday or Monday when the live shows are on, because the week before is very busy. The young fella loves the excitement of it all. “
