  • New Zealand are playing England in the third Test of the series at Headingly
New Zealand batter Henry Nicholls was victim to arguably the most unfortunate dismissal in Test cricket history during the first day of play in the third Test between the Kiwis and England at the Headingly Cricket Ground in Leeds on Thursday (June 23)
After New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first, Nicholls was looking solid at the crease and building a solid partnership for the fifth-wicket with the in-form Daryl Mitchell. However, in an unprecedented dismissal, Nicholls had to depart for a knock of 19 from Jack Leach’s bowling.

The left-handed batter stepped out of the crease and played a well-timed shot from the left-arm spinner’s bowling. While the shot seemed good enough to head towards the boundary, Nicholls did not have luck on his side. The ball ended up hitting non-striker Mitchell’s bat and deflected straight into Alex Lees’ hands, who was standing at mid-on.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar reacted to the dismissal by remembering his childhood days playing gully cricket. The batting great gave a hilarious point of view saying by ‘gully cricket’ laws, this would have counted as non-striker’s out. “In gully cricket, we’d declare the non-striker out,” Tendulkar wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

Talking about the match, New Zealand were given a major boost before the match as skipper Kane Williamson returned to the playing XI after recovering from COVId-19. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat in a bid to avoid a whitewash having lost the first two games in the series.

For the third successive Test match in the series, Mitchell scored a century and has taken England above the 300-run mark before being dismissed for a knock of 109. Wicket-keeper batter Tom Blundell continued his fine form and scored a half-century. Both Stuart Broad and Leach have taken three wickets so far.
