The administration of a Colorado elementary school kept students’ gender changes from parents, emails show

OAn elementary school in Colorado has discussed how to oppose the wishes of parents who do not want the school to accommodate their child’s request to transition socially.

According to internal emails obtained through a public request by the parent activist group Parents Defending Education, a staff member at Laurel Elementary School in Fort Collins, Colo., asked administrators if they should ignore a parent’s request that their child be addressed by their legal name . and pronouns corresponding to their biological sex.

“I wonder what to do when an elementary school student has given his pronouns and his name, but his parents directly instruct school staff not to refer to the student by those pronouns,” the unnamed official said in an email dated April 4, 2022. . . . to support the student, but I heard that by law we have to follow the parents’ instructions because of the child’s age (primary school).”

A Laurel Elementary School administrator’s request for information was directed to a Poudre School District official, who directed the administrator to honor the student’s wishes regarding his name, but to use the student’s legal name when communicating with the child’s parents.

“The school must use the student’s affirmative name and pronouns at school and use their legal name and appropriate pronouns when speaking with the family until they support the student’s new name and pronouns,” the email said.

The Poudre School District did not respond to a request for comment.

Over the past year, school districts across the country have faced parental ire for promoting so-called “social gender transitions” for students of all ages without the permission or knowledge of the child’s parents. The practice has led to several lawsuits and prompted some elected officials to explore ways to ban the practice.

In a statement to v Washington ExaminerErica Sanzi, director of outreach for Parents Defending Education, called school officials’ discussions “dishonest.”

“It’s well documented that schools across the country in red and blue states withhold information from parents about their children’s gender transition, but these breaches of trust typically occur in middle and high schools,” Sanzi said. “These emails instructing elementary school staff to continue facilitating an elementary school student’s gender transition despite parents’ objections are truly dishonest.”
