Tyrone and Kildare would have preferred today’s EirGrid U20 Football Championship Final to be played at Croke Park, but neither will worry much about the location if they clinch the All-Ireland title at Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada.
Few teams know the correlation between underage and senior success better than Tyrone and they’ll be hoping that their U20 squad will provide the backbone of their senior set-up for years to come.
The Red Hands will seek to claim their first win at the U20 grade having last won the U21 version back in 2015. Of the team the defeated Tipperary in the final, nine were on the Tyrone senior panel last season when they won the Sam Maguire.
Kildare were inaugural winners of the U20 All-Ireland back in 2018 and the likes of Aaron Masterson, Jimmy Hyland and Paddy Woodgate are now part of Glenn Ryan’s senior set-up.
The Lilywhites defeated Dublin in their provincial final while they had five points to spare over Sligo in Kingspan Breffni Park last Saturday.
Tyrone edged out Kerry in Portlaoise on Sunday thanks to a late goal from Ciarán Bogue while Ruairi Canavan hit 0-8 in a Man-of-the-Match performance.
This evening’s final has the making of a thriller and we’ll have live score-by-score updates from Carrick-on-Shannon right here. . .
