Who Will Come Up From Below Because Only 6 Are Playing – Aakash Chopra Questions Ravi Shastri’s “Keep Test Cricket To Top 6 Teams” Remark

Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Aakash Chopra has questioned former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri’s “keep Test Cricket to top 6 teams” remark.

Recently, Shastri said that 10 or 12 teams should not be playing Test cricket and it should be restricted to 6 teams to give preference to quality over quantity so that the purest format of the game can survive.

“You cannot have 12 teams or ten teams. You keep the top six, keep the quality and respect quality over quantity,” Shastri had said on Sky Sports.

“Whether it’s India, Australia, or England you have to qualify for red-ball series if you want to be around to play Test match cricket. Then it doesn’t matter if England doesn’t go to the West Indies, or the West Indies come to England. If they’re in the top six, they play, but if they’re not in the top six they don’t play,” he added.

Speaking in a video shared on his YouTube channel on Friday, Chopra shared his views on Shastri’s statement. He elaborated:

“Test cricket can happen in tiers but if only the top six play Test cricket, I feel world cricket will be in trouble, including Test cricket, which all of us are saying is a very important format and will not go anywhere.

“Who will decide the six countries, the top six in the rankings? Let’s say that’s the case, what will the others do? He (Shastri) said in the discussion that if you go out of the six, then you have no job and teams will come up from below. But who will come up from below because only six are playing Test cricket and the others are not playing at all.”

If you don’t play ODI cricket at all and play only World Cup to World Cup, then why do you play it at all? – Aakash Chopra

The cricketer-turned-commentator also shared his views on the recommendations that 50-over cricket should only be restricted to the World Cups. Aakash Chopra said that the World Cup should be played in a format that the teams play on a regular basis between two World Cups. He asserted:

“If you don’t play ODI cricket at all and play only World Cup to World Cup, then why do you play it at all? Why are you carrying it? Leave it, don’t play, it’s absolutely fine. The World Cup should be in that format in which you play cricket between the two World Cups.”

Chopra further said that drawing parallels with the football World Cup is not ideal because football does not have three formats. He said:

“Everyone cites the football model but football does not have three formats. If you say you won’t play ODI cricket your whole life but the 50-over World Cup is important, I will say not at all.”
